Yoga Gear

After a week of yoga I am geared up for another round. I signed up for a month since I am off for the month of November. I thought I would share some of my favorite yoga gear. There is something fun about the colorful gear that fills the yoga studio. Yoga gear is my new favorite stuff to collect. I try to find what I can at TJ Maxx but some of it is worth the splurge.

A favorite headband. Find it here.

Essential to mop up all the sweat from hot yoga. Find it here
I swear by the Nike Dri-Fit pants. I have been wearing them for years. I honestly believe that you can never have enough pairs.

I am always drawn to Lululemon clothes. They are a bit pricy so I have yet to splurge on anything other than a headband but they look amazing. I have many friends who swear by them for all types of work outs. I must add that workout gear has come a long way since I started exercising. My freshman year of high school I wore soccer shorts and oversized t-shirts to school everyday. Today's exercise gear is sleek and functional. I appreciate that it wicks moisture and helps keep you dry. Almost time to hit the mat again.

The Flop

I spent all day yesterday making bread. I started the night before making the leven. I mixed the dough at 8AM, let it rise for 8 hrs followed the directions to a T. But some how our bread never rose. It tasted great, the crust was crisp and crunchy but the end product was dense. Not sure what happened. But I will try again once I have all of the official equipment. I had to order a dutch oven double cooker to bake the bread. For the first attempt I borrowed a dutch oven from the neighbors. I have to say that my heart about sank when I opened the oven and saw that the bread did not rise after so many hours of work. I had to head on over to the store and pick up some bread before our dinner guests arrived. I hope the second attempt will be more satisfying!
The FLOP!

Here are some of my successes from yesterday.
I made Sashimi for Kevin for lunch
I made Ina's Tuna Salad as an appetizer for dinner. It was delicious! We had white bean chicken chili with all the fixin's, some corn bread (which I had to get last minute when my bread did not rise.) Dinner was fun. Good food, good wine and good friends.

Neighbors

Robert Frost
Mending Wall

Something there is that doesn't love a wall,
That sends the frozen-ground-swell under it,
And spills the upper boulders in the sun,
And makes gaps even two can pass abreast.
The work of hunters is another thing:
I have come after them and made repair
Where they have left not one stone on a stone,
But they would have the rabbit out of hiding,
To please the yelping dogs. The gaps I mean,
No one has seen them made or heard them made,
But at spring mending-time we find them there.
I let my neighbor know beyond the hill;
And on a day we meet to walk the line
And set the wall between us once again.
We keep the wall between us as we go.
To each the boulders that have fallen to each.
And some are loaves and some so nearly balls
We have to use a spell to make them balance:
'Stay where you are until our backs are turned!'
We wear our fingers rough with handling them.
Oh, just another kind of out-door game,
One on a side. It comes to little more:
There where it is we do not need the wall:
He is all pine and I am apple orchard.
My apple trees will never get across
And eat the cones under his pines, I tell him.
He only says, 'Good fences make good neighbors'.
Spring is the mischief in me, and I wonder
If I could put a notion in his head:
'Why do they make good neighbors? Isn't it
Where there are cows?
But here there are no cows.
Before I built a wall I'd ask to know
What I was walling in or walling out,
And to whom I was like to give offence.
Something there is that doesn't love a wall,
That wants it down.' I could say 'Elves' to him,
But it's not elves exactly, and I'd rather
He said it for himself. I see him there
Bringing a stone grasped firmly by the top
In each hand, like an old-stone savage armed.
He moves in darkness as it seems to me
Not of woods only and the shade of trees.
He will not go behind his father's saying,
And he likes having thought of it so well
He says again, "Good fences make good neighbors."

This is one of my favorite Robert Frost poems. I remember I gave a presentation on this poem in 8th grade. I am pretty sure my mom did most of the writing. Yesterday we helped our friends and neighbors move to a new house in the neighborhood. Lucky for us they actually moved closer to our apartment. We are so lucky to have our friends live close by. What I love about this Frost poem is that despite our differences and maybe because of them our relationships are stronger. Boundaries are important in our western society and although there is not a physical fence around our home, we have good neighbors.

A good friend from high school and beyond and my roommate for the past couple of years recently returned from a photography trip to France. She happens to work for one of my favorite organizations, National Geographic. Back in high school, Molly and I spent hours looking through old issues of National Geographic and we both said we wanted to work there, travel the world and take photographs, well I said that or be a doctor. Molly followed that dream and here we are almost 12 years later and she has traveled to Egypt and now to France with National Geographic. She started a photo blog of her trip. You can find it here. Hope you enjoy her work. Above are some of her pictures from Egypt.

Marathon Weekend

This weekend in the Marine Corps Marathon in DC and it has me thinking about my first marathon. I ran the 2007 Boston Marathon with my good friend Ben and we raised over $10,000 for diabetes research. To this day this is still the accomplishment I am most proud of. The training was hard but the marathon and the last 21 mile training run we did a couple of weeks before were two of the best days of my life. Although I will not be stretching out my hamstrings and joining the start tomorrow I will be thinking of the runners, of the struggles and joy they will feel during the day. I am sure that another marathon may be in my future but for now a trip down memory lane. Happy running!

In Boston before we headed out to the start on the bus.

At mile 23 or so.

Resting for a second at mile 18 with my mom and Joann

After I finished!

Sourdough Starter

We started making our own sourdough bread starter from the natural yeast floating in the air. Here it is at 36 hrs. Look at all those bubbles. Here are the instructions on how to make your own. The Tartine Bakery book is on order, thanks to Dr. Kevin and it looks like there will be sourdough bread for our next weekend adventure a trip to the Trailview Cottage with a bunch of friends more on that later. I'll keep you posted on the progress of this sourdough. Cannot wait to take my first crusty bite.

Fermentation at work!

Rally to Restore Sanity

One of the perks to living in DC is that we can attend national events with ease. We were able to freeze our little tushies off during the inauguration of Barack Obama which was incredible. And tomorrow we will again march ourselves down to the National Mall and rally to restore sanity and or keep fear alive. Jon Stewart and Steven Colbert have become something of the political authority for much of our generation with their comedic twist on the daily news. Several friends are traveling to the city for the weekend to march or to run the Marine Corps Marathon and we will be thrilled to have them and show them around our favorite city. Hope to see you out there on the National Mall this weekend and please remember to VOTE on TUESDAY!!!

Happy Friday.
